Bhagwan Adinath, also known as Rishabhanatha, is revered as the First Tirthankara and is regarded as one of the earliest spiritual teachers in Indian civilization. His life represents the ideals of righteous living, compassion, renunciation, and self-realization. According to Jain tradition, he was not only a spiritual guide but also the first teacher of human civilization, introducing agriculture, craftsmanship, trade, education, governance, and ethical living at a time when humanity faced uncertainty and transition.
His teachings continue to inspire millions by emphasizing inner transformation, harmony with nature, non-violence, self-restraint, and respect for every living being. More importantly, his life reminds us that lasting progress is achieved not through dependence, but through knowledge, responsibility, and purposeful action.
Jain tradition tells us that in the earliest age of human existence, people lived in a world of natural abundance. Their needs were fulfilled effortlessly by nature, and they did not have to cultivate land, build homes, practise trades, or earn a livelihood.
As time passed, this age of abundance gradually came to an end. The wish-fulfilling trees that had sustained humanity disappeared, resources became limited, and people were left confused and uncertain about how to survive. They turned to Bhagwan Adinath, their king, seeking guidance and protection.
As a great ruler, Bhagwan Adinath possessed immense wealth and authority. Yet he understood that material wealth alone could never provide a lasting solution. Wealth could be exhausted, but knowledge would empower generations.
Instead of offering temporary relief, he chose to transform society through education and self-reliance. He taught people how to cultivate the land, rear cattle, prepare food, build homes, practise trade, create tools, develop arts and crafts, and organise communities based on responsibility and ethical values. Through these teachings, people learned to build prosperous lives through their own effort, skill, and integrity.
This moment marked the beginning of an organised society founded on dignity, honest work, and shared responsibility. Bhagwan Adinath demonstrated that the greatest form of service is not merely giving resources, but equipping people with the knowledge and values that enable them to create a better future for themselves and for others.
After fulfilling his responsibilities as a king and guide, Bhagwan Adinath renounced his kingdom, wealth, and worldly possessions in pursuit of spiritual liberation. His journey from a universal emperor to the first Tirthankara teaches that while knowledge and work sustain society, inner wisdom leads the soul towards liberation.
